The renown singer Sona Mohapatra wrote an ANGRY post on Facebook criticizing Mood Indigo – the annul and biggest festival of IIT-Bombay. The singer protested their sexism behavior when she was prevented from her solo performance and asked her to “get a man along with her to perform on their stage”.
Sona Mohapatra never minces her words from sexism and feminism issue even though she has to lose her popularity from her straightforward comment. Few days ago she came in the news when she was facing backlash and threats for her criticism on Salman Khan’s insensitive comment on ‘rape’. Ever she did not afraid to raise voice against the degrading music scene in Coldpay’s performance in India. This time she took to her Facebook page to slam IIT Bombay on sexism issue. What exactly happened that made Sona so angry?
According to the singer, she had been receiving the request from Mood Indigo to perform on their stage, along with a condition’ – take a male singer to perform on the stage. Hence, Sona feels that when a big platform like Mood Indigo that also claims to be Asia’s biggest cultural fiesta, focuses on such sexism outlook, she felt the need to write her post. It is about most than 1,200 words post where she says, “it is gut wrenching & it takes effort & all the love in my heart for my country to do so. That the premiere educational institutes of the country are blindly propagating such values while the government is putting a spotlight on the plight of the ‘Beti’s’ in the country in their public campaigns in 2016 is ironical. You ought to be leading the way in my not so humble opinion not just counting on the government for everything. You have no business being in the business of education using this country’s tax-payers money when you do not pursue its constitutional ideals. That your students are supposedly the top ‘intellect’ of our country & are being groomed to be in the top echelons of our country’s future scares me”.
However, a spokesperson from IIT-B rejected Sona’s accusation saying that it is true that they approached the singer to perform on their stage. But she quoted a high amount that was beyond their budget.
