Nandita Das’s Manto Has Been Chosen As Un Certain Regard For 71st Cannes Film Festival

For the 71st Cannes Festival, line up of movies has been announced already. Competition among movies is expected to be seen in French Riviera. Directorial venture of Nandita Das called Manto has been chosen for the Un Certain Regard category.

In the movie Manto, titular role will be played by talented Gangs of Wasseypur actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Through the movie, life of Manto spend in Mumbai will be showcased. It is a city that is loved by Manto immensely and missed at the same time.  Along with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, sterling cast for the movie can be seen with Swara Bhaskar, Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Ranveer Shorey and Swanand Kirkire.

Even last year, Nandita has gone to Cannes to market her movie which is an Indo-French production. Regarding the movie, Director, Nandita Das has said, I see Manto’s story as a universal one that can cross borders easily. I feel it is timely not just for the Indian subcontinent, but for the world.

Later on, it has been added It’s not a cradle-to-grave biopic but a drama celebrating the life and work of a writer who was a natural rebel, a man who went against the tide without being a conscious activist,….The film will cover a period of seven years between 1946 and 1952, which was an important phase in the history of the subcontinent

Un Certain Regard section has been first introduced in Cannes Film Festival in the year 1998. Through this section of festival, films with different perspective are given more importance. Movies from this section usually run simultaneously with the main category. About 20 movies can be noticed in this category that has trying to win the first prize.

In the past, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Masaan has won a special prize called Prix avenir prometteur in the year 2005. However, Indian Films have not managed to win an award in the main category till date.
