Do you even remember the Bollywood songs from yesteryears? Those sung by Lata Mangeshkar or maybe Geeta Dutt. It’s possible some of those reading this post may not have arrived yet. Those were times when music was more about melody and in keeping with the times. Dresses that actors and actresses wore were quite different and they were shot within the studios mostly.
Then came the times of Shammi Kapoor’s Yahoo….and we heard Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar yodeling to glory. Lata Mangeshkar continued to rule the singing scene since her voice set well with heroines of the next generation as well. Sreedevi, Rekha, Sharmila Tagore and others have lip-synced to her songs.
With the advent of technology the way songs were recorded changed. Sound sounded better. So, we had a Himesh Reshammiya and Atif Aslam crooning Aashiq Banaya Apne..to the listener’s benefit. These days, there’s a whole list of playback singers who spring from the reality shows in television. This is good for the artists as well as the audience since we get to hear a variety of voices. The choice of the singer depends on the music director who has a say in the type of voice he wants. It also depends on the genre of the song and the voice quality and lastly the actor/actress on whom the song is being filmed.
